Workspace strategy for Lakehouse/Warehouse in Microsoft Fabric

Proposed session for SQLBits 2026

TL; DR

Choosing the right workspace strategy is crucial for a successful implementation of Microsoft Fabric. Should you consolidate everything into one workspace, have separate workspaces for each stage, or create distinct workspaces for different workloads? Or perhaps something entirely different? Several factors will influence your workspace strategy, including the size and composition of your development team, your DevOps strategy, and the need for workload/data isolation. Some of these considerations stem from the way Fabric operates, while others are due to security restrictions. By the end of this session, the audience will have a better understanding of the challenges in Fabric related to workspace strategy and the possible solutions.

Session Details

Choosing the right workspace strategy is crucial for a successful implementation of Microsoft Fabric. Should you consolidate everything into one workspace, have separate workspaces for each stage, or create distinct workspaces for different workloads? Or perhaps something entirely different?

Several factors will influence your workspace strategy, including the size and composition of your development team, your DevOps strategy, and the need for workload/data isolation. Some of these considerations stem from the way Fabric operates, while others are due to security restrictions.

In this session, we will explore each of these factors and analyze their impact on your workspace strategy.

We will start with the popular Medallion architecture, as most teams use some version of it when building lakehouses/warehouses in Fabric.

Using the Medallion architecture, we will demonstrate how various factors affect workspace strategy and show ways to either work around or overcome these challenges.

This session is based on several Fabric projects in production, where I have encountered most of the challenges faced when designing the right workspace strategy.

By the end of this session, the audience will have a better understanding of the challenges in Fabric related to workspace strategy and the possible solutions. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, starting correctly can significantly reduce the need for re-work or workarounds later on.

3 things you'll get out of this session

Help the audience understand how workspace work in Fabric Help the audience understand the different strategies and their pros and cons Help the audience choose the right strategy based on their needs
