No-Nonsense Business Data Modeling for Everyone

Proposed session for SQLBits 2026

TL; DR

Power BI and Fabric promise easy analytics, but without proper business process modeling, BI projects fail. This session covers the fundamentals of effective modeling - cutting through hype to deliver essentials.

Session Details

According to the marketing, Power BI and Fabric make it easier than ever to ingest, explore, and analyze data across an organization. With its intuitive drag-and-drop interface, often dubbed "PowerPoint for Data," anyone can create stunning reports and answer complex business questions to propel their organization into data-driven bliss. Business Intelligence has never been more accessible - or so they say.

Unfortunately, the reality often falls short of the marketing promise.

Without a deep understanding of business processes and the ability to model them effectively, BI projects risk being inconsistent, difficult to use, and slow—or worse, delivering incorrect information. The adage "garbage in, garbage out" remains as relevant as ever. And in a world increasingly powered by AI, the fundamentals of business process modeling matter more than ever.

This session cuts through the hype and gets back to the essentials. We’ll explore what a business process truly is, the critical questions needed to model it, and - most importantly - how to model it effectively. This might not be the session you want, but it’s absolutely the session you need.

3 things you'll get out of this session

Explain modeling purpose How to break down a business process How to model a business process
