PaaS solutions are often praised as being “the right way to do cloud”, and for a lot of organizations there can be many benefits to using those solutions. They typically include managed backups, built-in high availability, and automating updating with minimal downtime. However, PaaS solutions are not all sunshine and rainbows—especially if your workload is approaching the limits of a particular service tier. In this session you will learn about a variety of PaaS offerings, but focus areas will include:

• Database as a service offerings like Amazon RDS, Managed instance, and Azure SQL DB
• PaaS pricing and scaling models and how they impact architectural decisions
• The cost/benefit analysis of how to choose a PaaS offering for you application.

PaaS solutions can also cost a lot more than a similar VM solution, and your options for growth may be limited. However, for many applications, you may see benefit from reducing management overhead, especially for less critical services.
