Dr John Tunnicliffe

Dr. John Tunnicliffe is a hands-on architect of BI solutions for the modern enterprise. He inspires development teams to deliver best-in-class systems to meet the most demanding business requirements.  Well versed in the Microsoft technology stack, Agile methodologies and DevOps techniques, John designs systems where much of the “plumbing” code is auto-generated and the entire deployment automated.

John has been working with SQL Server since 2001 and has extensive experience of implementing a variety of BI solutions across a wide range of industries including professional service companies (EY, Capco), insurance (QatarRe, ERS, Hiscox, Catlin), investment banking (Rabobank, BNP Paribas, Barclays Capital, Commerzbank, Bank of America), retail (Argos, Hotels.com, Virgin Travel), and healthcare (IMS Health).

As a regular speaker at the SQLBits conference and PASS SQL Saturday events, John has covered topics such DevOps and the data warehouse and building an infrastructure to support real-time reporting.  Slides and recordings of his presentations are available at http://www.sqlbits.com/Speakers/Dr_John_Tunnicliffe

Dr John Tunnicliffe's Sessions

DevOps, CI and the Data WarehouseSQLBits 2018

DevOps and continuous integration provide huge benefits to data warehouse development. John will be showing how you can use VSTS and Octopus Deploy to build, test and deploy your data warehouse

Continuous Integration and the Data WarehouseSQLBits 2016

Continuous Integration is not normally associated with data warehouse projects due to the perceived complexity of implementation. John will be showing how modern tools make it simple to apply Continuous Integration techniques to data warehouse projects

Designing a database to best support multidimensional OLAPSQLBits 2015

Data warehouse designers often ignore the specific needs of an OLAP database. In this session, John will outline the best ways to optimise your relational database to support your multidimensional OLAP cubes

Incremental processing of SSAS Multidimensional databasesSQLBits 2013

Processing of SSAS OLAP databases can be a tricky business, particularly when it comes to incremental processing of dimensions. John will give you real life examples of why certain approaches work and others do not.

Building an infrastructure to support real-time OLAPSQLBits 2012

Users love flexible analytics but hate to wait for the data to be loaded into a traditional data warehouse. John will describe how to build an infrastructure to support real-time loading of your OLAP cubes so your user's get exactly what they want

Building a dynamic OLAP environmentSQLBits 2011

This session will present the tools and techniques used to create OLAP cubes and supporting data marts on-the-fly from a mere set of data files and configuration metadata.

Introduction to the Microsoft BI Technology StackSQLBits 2009

John will introduce you to Analysis Services 2008, demonstrate browsing cubes with Excel 2007, deploying dashboards in SharePoint built using Excel Services and demonstrate how PerformancePoint Services can add the glitz to your BI project.
