Ingesting API data with Python Notebooks
Proposed session for SQLBits 2026TL; DR
Learn how to explore REST APIs, read documentation, authenticate, and prototype API calls using external tools. Build Python functions and notebooks to load REST API data into Microsoft Fabric efficiently.
Session Details
Do you want to load data into Microsoft Fabric from REST APIs? REST APIs are everywhere. They are a great way to get data from one system to another, but they can be difficult to work with if you don't know where to start.
In this session, you will learn how to use external tools to explore a REST API. You will learn how to find the information you need in the API documentation, and how to use that information to create a Python function that loads the data into Microsoft Fabric.
Along the way you may learn a thing or two about structuring your development with variables, functions, methods and classes.
After attending this session you will be able to find and use API documentation, authenticate with an API, and prototype API calls. You will also have knowledge about the use of Python notebooks to load data from REST APIs into Microsoft Fabric.
Topics:
- REST API
- API Documentation
- API Authentication
- Prototyping with external tools
- Python Notebooks

A deep dive into Direct Lake
The new Direct Lake storage mode in Power BI promises to revolutionize data handling by blending the real-time nature of DirectQuery and the high performance of Import mode. Is this all just hype, or does Direct Lake truly deliver on these claims?
Advanced Power BI refresh with ADF/Synapse
After this session, you will be able to conceptualize and implement different Power BI refresh scheduling patterns in ADF/Synapse. You’ll learn what limitations in Power BI you can overcome with an “external” orchestration tool as well as the different building blocks available. Finally, we will go through an example implementation as well as a step-by-step demo of how you can set this up yourself.
Supercharge Power BI with Azure Synapse Analytics
In this session we will cover how to architect an end-to-end enterpise analytics platform so that we utilize the best of both worlds. The extremely versatile ETL capabilities of Synapse and the powerful data modelling in Power BI.
