SQLBits 2023

An in-depth review of the latest advancements in authentication for Azure SQL and SQL Server 2022

In this deep-dive session, we will review the specific authentication features in Azure SQL and SQL Server 2022 such as multi-factor authentication, managed identities, support for on-behalf of authentication, and policy-based authentication methods management, etc. and show what makes AAD authentication superior to SQL Authentication. Furthermore, we will illustrate how these features can be configured to provide users of Azure SQL with the most secure, passwordless authentication experience.
Authentication, or verifying the credentials when a user signs in to an application or service, is an essential component of any security strategy. Azure’s Active Directory offers a state-of-the-art modern authentication system with many advanced features while at the same time simplifying the user’s sign-in experience.  Over the past years, we have made significant investments in supporting Azure Active Directory (AAD) Authentication in our SQL products and services culminating in the support of AAD for Azure Arc-enabled SQL Server 2022 as well as SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines.
