Semantic Bridge: Importing Databricks Metric Views into Tabular semantic models

Proposed session for SQLBits 2026

TL; DR

Use Databricks Metric Views and Fabric Power BI semantic models interchangeably with the Semantic Bridge. This new feature from Tabular Editor allows you to seamlessly import the full structure of a Metric View into a Tabular semantic model.

Session Details

This session is an overview of the Semantic Bridge, an innovation by Tabular Editor to support seamless import of Metric Views from Databricks into a Tabular model in Fabric, Power BI, or Analysis Services.

Databricks introduced Metric Views in the summer of 2025. This is a semantic layer, similar to the semantic model in Microsoft's BI platforms. It allows defining joins, dimensions, and measures, among other semantic metadata. Because this is a non-standard extension to SQL, Power BI's native connectors do not allow querying these Metric Views directly.

The Semantic Bridge allows you to automatically translate these Metric Views into Tabular semantic models that you can deploy directly to Fabric, including translating SQL queries and expressions into M and DAX.

This allows you to combine Databricks and Microsoft BI in many flexible ways.

The session will include extended demos of importing and programmatically manipulating Databricks Metric Views.

3 things you'll get out of this session

1. Learn about integration between different platforms' semantic layers 2. Learn how to use Semantic Bridge for automatic import 3. Learn how to automatically validate and programmatically edit a Metric View
