Click minimalism in Power BI development
Proposed session for SQLBits 2026TL; DR
Ditch the "high-click" workflow. Learn to use AI, PBIR, and TMDL to build Power BI reports via natural language. We'll show you how to leverage GitHub Copilot and VS Code to automate modeling and make your development truly click-minimalist.
Session Details
Power BI is a low-code experience, not only to do your ETL (extract, transform and load) process but also to create the visualizations and reports. Always giving a user experience that would allow anyone to quickly start building engaging data stories and take the users to data driven decisions.
However, while it evolved in complexity although remains a low code experience it is currently a high click experience.
With the enhancements of AI and the new reporting (PBIR() and semantic model formats (TMDL) currently is easy to make a agent learn the structure and format of our models and reports and make then understand how they need to be generated only be explaining what we need.
In this session we will show case how you can generate and update your semantic models and reports by making use of the Power BI Project folder and using natural language you can make your Power BI development click minimalist.
The session includes:
How to start Power BI development based on natural language.
What to expect when making specific prompts.
Best practices to develop and maintaining semantic models and reports using agents.
Examples on how to enhance development GitHub Copilot in conjunction with Visual Studio Code.
Participants will leave the session equipped with practical skills to integrate Power BI and AI tools in order to take advantage of PBIR and TMDL format in their Power BI workflows, to streamline development and improve data modelling efficiency.

3 things you'll get out of this session
1. Integrate AI in your Power BI Development,
2. Best Practices for accurate prompting
3. Enhanced usage of the new Power BI formats (PBIR,TMDL)

Prepare for Takeoff: Navigating Power BI Developer Mode - Is the Journey Worth the Flight?
The new Power BI Developer Mode changes dataset and report development, providing a faster, more accessible approach. This mode includes source control and seamless integration with DevOps and Fabric, making it an impressive tool for advanced users and IT professionals.
However, the good news is that you don't need to be a full-time developer or have an extensive IT background to benefit from this feature. In this session, I will demonstrate how you can take advantage of Developer Mode without the need for advanced integrations like DevOps and Fabric.
Combine Power BI with External Tools
In this session we will take a look into some external tools and how can they help us take the our development skills to another level.
From the creation of metrics to the deployment of models the usage of Power BI can be optimize using external tools.
This session is for intermediate users that already know their way into Power BI but want to increase their development skills and speed.
