Beyond Blunt: Communicating Effectively without Compromising Honesty

Proposed session for SQLBits 2026

TL; DR

This session is a dive into communication skills, helping you to understand the power of adapting your communication style, and giving techniques to support you in interpreting situations & responding accordingly, or in coaching others with their communication skills.

Session Details

This session offers practical communication techniques for technical professionals.

This session is for anyone who wants to improve their communication skills at work; particularly anyone who tends to be told they are too blunt, too technical or too honest in their communication. It would also be useful for people managers who need to support team members with their communication

The session introduces some concepts and techniques which help technical specialists understand why they may sometimes need to adapt their natural communication style, and how to do it. When applied, these techniques will help you to recognise situations where your natural communication style might not get the outcome you want to achieve, and to adapt accordingly.

You will learn:
- Different communication styles & tones, and how to interpret them
- The impact that mismatched communication approaches can have
- How to be honest and get the outcome you're looking for
- How to consider and avoid the unintended consequences of your communication style
- Frameworks to help you provide professional and proactive responses to escalations and issues, or to coach others to do so
