Backup and Restore / Yes it's still the most important thing
Proposed session for SQLBits 2026TL; DR
The ability to perform backups and restores is the most important task a DBA has to perform. Learn how to do an excellent job and ensure that the data you are responsible for can be recovered.
Session Details
Creating regular and reliable backups and being able to restore them in the required timeframe is still the most important part of the job of a DBA. Unfortunately, often this is forgotten, ignored or assumed to be done by someone else. And then it happens. A failure and we need the last backup ... what now.
This session presented by Thomas Grohser who has over 30 years of experience with SQL Server and had to handle several disaster recoveries over the years will show you what you need to do to be ready when (not if, when) a restore is needed.
We will also discuss how to use QA and DEV refreshes to test your backups and how to make sure all regulatory requirements are met and ensure your backup/restore strategy is not breaking the law and getting you or your company in trouble.
Many managers think that using a managed cloud service or some "magic" backup software on the storage array will handle the backups, but this is unfortunately not true.
