Azure SQL PaaS service - Basic to advance

Proposed session for SQLBits 2026

TL; DR

Azure SQL is great, but with so many options—serverless vs provisioned, Hyperscale vs Business Critical, SQL MI vs SQL DB—most people still ask: “Where do I even start… and how do I go all the way to enterprise-grade?” This session takes you from beginner concepts to deep dive into advanced features and capibilities.

Session Details

Azure SQL PaaS is one of the most capable database platforms in the industry—combining the full SQL Server engine with cloud-native resilience, automation, intelligence, and security. Yet many teams only scratch the surface or get lost in service tiers, compute choices, HA models, and cost optimisation questions.
In this session, we’ll take a guided, fast‑paced journey from the fundamentals of Azure SQL PaaS to advanced enterprise capabilities. We’ll start with the basics: understanding the Azure SQL family - Azure SQL Database, Elastic Pools, Hyperscale, and Managed Instance. Then we progressively dive deeper into high availability, geo‑replication, auto‑failover groups, performance tuning (Intelligent Query Processing, Query Store), and built‑in security features like TDE, auditing, data classification, and Always Encrypted
You’ll also learn when to use SQL Managed Instance vs SQL Database, how to modernize legacy workloads at scale , and how features like serverless compute, Hyperscale storage, automatic tuning, and intelligent insights can dramatically simplify operations and reduce cost.
This session is perfect for developers, DBAs, cloud architects, and data engineers who want a clear, practical path from “getting started” to “expert‑level mastery.”

3 things you'll get out of this session

The objectives of this session is to 1. Understand the Azure SQL PaaS landscape 2. Choose the right deployment model 3. Build resilient, enterprise‑ready architectures 4. Apply built‑in intelligence for performance tuning 5. Implement modern security & governance 6. Master cost optimization techniques 7. Execute successful migrations to Azure SQL PaaS

Empowering SQL: Mastering Intelligent Query Processing in 20 Minutes
Dive into the heart of database optimization with our 20-minute session on Intelligent Query Processing (IQP) in SQL Server and Azure SQL. In this power-packed talk, we will demystify IQP, the driving force behind accelerated query performance. We'll begin with a quick overview, highlighting the pivotal role of IQP in query optimization and database efficiency. Then, we'll dive into key IQP features focusing on their impacts in real-world.

Managed Instance Link - Seamless migration to Azure
We, the cloud solutions architects from Microsoft, will be talking around SQL migration journey from on-prem to Azure SQL in general, taking you through all available Microsoft's migration tools like DMA, DMS, Azure Migrate, ADS, etc, and then focus on migration to Managed Instance using SQL MI Link. You should take away with you the understanding of when to use which tool and how the newly available Azure SQL Managed Instance Link can help you to achieve a minimum downtime migration of on-prem SQL Server to Azure SQL Managed Instance.

The Power of Polybase with SQL - True data Virtualisation
Customers would be able to understand what exactly Polybase is, why it's useful, what are the use cases and finally how to use this feature of SQL Server. Polybase have been around for quite some time, since SQL Server 2016, however, the awareness and the way it virtualises the data may not have been understood well for some customers.
