How to develop a SQL Server Workload Mindset?

2022

TL; DR

Learn an easy-to-follow mindset to help you find easier and faster root causes of performance problems, even in a meeting, phone call, or job interview without access to the specific system.

Session Details

Being responsible for the administration of SQL servers can be very confusing, especially for career changers or even beginners. Database servers seem to follow their laws and often behave counterintuitively. The vast amount of information available via DMVs etc. can easily overwhelm one and quickly lead one to guess causes. This session sums up decades of experience with database systems to a few key points explaining the critical moving parts behind the curtain. The goal of this session is to present an easy-to-follow mindset that will make it easier and faster to find the root causes of performance problems in your database in future situations. Even without direct access to complex monitoring systems or magic DMVs, you will be able to recognize common patterns directly in a phone call, meeting, or job interview.
