Why I joined the DE&I committee

We asked a valued member of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team, Gavita Regunath, to share with us why she decided to join the SQLBits team and also what she believes will be an important goal and target for SQLBits with the 2024 conference planning forthcoming!

Take it away, Gavi!

‘I joined the DE&I (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) committee because I believe in the importance of creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace. I am passionate about closing the gap in representation and opportunities for underrepresented groups in the field of data and AI. The fact that only 20% of data science and AI professionals are women (according to the World Economic Forum) is a clear indication that we still have a long way to go. I want to be a part of the solution, to make a real difference and create a more equitable environment for everyone.

As for what I think will be important for 2024, I believe that DE&I will continue to be a critical issue. Companies and organisations will need to continue to make a concerted effort to create an inclusive culture, attract and retain a diverse workforce in data and AI. The next generation of girls need to see more diversity in the field, and by having more mothers and women in leadership positions, it can help to make it easier for them to pursue their passion and goals.’

If you have any ideas or contributions you’d like to suggest to the DEI committee, feel free to voice your concerns and opinions to dei@sqlbits.com.
