5 Tips for Making the Most of Your First Data Conference

Attending your first (or any!) data conference can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. With so many sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities, it can be challenging to know where to start. But don’t worry, SQLBits has got you covered!

Here are 5 tips for making the most of your first data conference…

Plan ahead:

Before the conference, discuss with yourself, and perhaps your boss, what your goal for this conference is, what would you like to take away from it? Certain knowledge? More connections, this one’s entirely your choice! You should also take some time to review the schedule and plan which sessions and training days you want to attend. Make a list of the ones that interest you the most and prioritize them based on your goals for attending the conference.

Networking:

One of the biggest benefits of attending a conference is the opportunity to meet and network with other professionals in your field, and at SQLBits we give you the chance to meet the makers of those who created the programs you use daily! Take advantage of this by introducing yourself to others and exchanging contact information, everyone is in the same boat, and this is a mutually beneficial contact exchange, don’t be afraid to swap details. You never know who you might meet that could help you in your career.

Take notes:

This might seem obvious but with so much information being presented, it can be easy to forget important details and getting carried away in the flow of things. Make sure to take notes during sessions and training days so you can refer back to them later. It’s also a good idea to bring a notebook or laptop to take notes in (write/type in full and neatly so you can reflect later!)

Ask questions:

Don’t be afraid to ask questions during sessions. This is a great way to clarify information and engage with the presenter. It also shows that you are interested and invested in the topic. Our speakers specifically LOVE questions they are there to help and support you, if you have something to ask, don’t regret it and just say what’s on your mind (at an appropriate time of course!)

Have fun:

While attending a data conference is a great opportunity to learn and grow professionally, it’s also important to have fun! Take breaks, explore the city, and enjoy the experience. You’ll come away feeling energized and inspired. Oh, and the SQLBits party will be a great opportunity for you to let loose and chat with new friends – while dressed up in a costume!

Attending your first data conference can be a bit overwhelming, but by following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to making the most of the experience. Remember to plan, network, take notes, ask questions, and most importantly, have fun!
