Infrastructure as Code for Humans: The Why, the How, and the ‘Please Don’t Click That’

Regular 50 minute session for SQLBits 2026

TL; DR

In this session, we’ll explore the why and the how behind IaC, focusing less on the mechanics and more on the principles that make it transformative for data teams.

Session Details

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is often introduced as a collection of tools, templates, and YAML files — but the real value isn’t in the syntax. It’s in the mindset.

In this session, we’ll explore the why and the how behind IaC, focusing less on the mechanics and more on the principles that make it transformative for data teams.

This talk is designed for DBAs, data engineers, BI developers, and consultants who want to understand IaC without getting lost in the weeds.

You don’t need to be a DevOps specialist or a cloud architect; if you’ve ever deployed something manually and hoped you’d remember how to do it again, you’re in the right room.

You’ll leave with a practical understanding of what IaC can do for you, how to start small, and how to build confidence as you go. No heavy tooling, no overwhelming demos — just the principles, patterns, and mindset that help you move from “I hope this works” to “I know exactly how this works.”

A friendly, practical introduction to the why and how of Infrastructure as Code — focusing on mindset, patterns, and real‑world value rather than tooling. Perfect for data professionals who want consistency, repeatability, and fewer deployment surprises.
