Build Your DataOps Foundation With CI/CD for Power BI and Fabric

Full day training session for SQLBits 2026

TL; DR

This workshop shows how to build a scalable DataOps foundation with CI/CD for Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, covering version control, automation, and enterprise-ready deployment workflows from basics to advanced scenarios.

Session Details

Many teams struggle to scale Power BI and Microsoft Fabric development beyond ad hoc version control and manual deployments. The challenge is not only introducing CI/CD, but building a repeatable, enterprise-ready DataOps foundation that supports collaboration, quality, and long-term growth.

This training session guides attendees from fundamentals to advanced CI/CD practices for Power BI and Fabric. In the first half of the day, you will build a complete CI/CD setup for Power BI projects using GitHub, focusing on:

- Using Power BI Project files (PBIP) for structured version control
- Setting up repositories and branching strategies
- Collaborating on features, resolving merge conflicts, and rolling back changes
- Implementing automated quality checks with the Best Practice Analyzer and related tools

In the second half, the focus shifts to Microsoft Fabric, where you will:

- Configure source control for Fabric workspaces
- Explore the Fabric CI/CD experience and fabric-cli for scripted deployments
- Implement automated testing, approvals, and post-deployment housekeeping

The workshop combines hands-on labs, real-world scenarios, and strategic guidance.

This session is designed for Power BI and Fabric developers, BI architects, and data platform engineers who want to adopt CI/CD from scratch and progress toward scalable, enterprise-grade automation. No prior CI/CD experience is required.

3 things you'll get out of this session

1) Learn how to implement structured version control and CI/CD for Power BI using PBIP and GitHub

2) Understand how to automate deployments and governance for Microsoft Fabric using built-in CI/CD and fabric-cli

3) Gain practical skills to design scalable, maintainable DataOps workflows suitable for enterprise environments
