I’m ever so often amused by the way XML is approach by seasoned SQL Server professionals. It reminds me of the story of the housewife that always cut the tail part of the Sunday roast before placing it in the cooking tray. When queried for the reason for doing so, she promptly responded “that’s how my mother used to do it”, ignoring the fact that her mother’s cooking tray was much much smaller and could not take the traditional roast uncut.

Parsing an XML data set into a relational schema in SQL Server is a well-established process, model the schema from the XML structure, write XQueries to parse the XML and then finally, load the data into the tables but there are lesser known alternatives, which can simplify the task. In this talk, we going to explore those alternatives for a completely different for ingesting XML sets.
