The tabular data model behind Power BI is incredibly powerful, determining the kind of analysis that can be carried out as well as the performance of the reporting solution. All too often, reports include complex DAX as a substitute for a simple, well-designed data model that can be easily understood and navigated. In this session, Rishi will look at the principles behind Data modelling (based on the Kimball methodology) and the techniques to apply these to a Power BI reporting solution. This will include looking at requirement gathering, conceptual modelling, splitting/combining data from multiple sources and defining the right kind of relationships between tables. We will also look at some common challenges with data models, such as working with data at different grains and model ambiguity, and techniques to deal with these.
