This is an updated version of my SQLBits 2018 session with the same name.
If you're using Visual Studio / SSDT for Tabular Model development, you're doing it wrong. Harsh but true. This session will introduce Tabular Editor, a free tool for developing and maintaining Analysis Services Tabular models. In 50 minutes, I will try to convince you why you should stop using Visual Studio, and start using Tabular Editor for all your Tabular modelling needs.

This demo-heavy session will provide an introduction to Tabular Editor, demonstrating both basic and advanced features, such as:

  • Using the intuitive drag-and-drop UI
  • Making model changes in batch
  • Visualising DAX dependencies
  • Using Formula Fix-up
  • Serialising your model as a series of .json files (instead of one big Model.bim file)
  • Building better quality models with the Best Practice Analyzer
  • Automating repetitive tasks using a script
  • ...and much more!

Attendees are assumed to be familiar with Tabular modelling and DAX.
