Today’s virtualization of hardware resources makes it uncertain what kind of real resources (CPU and IO) your system is actually running on. In case of cloud providers like Azure, Amazon and Google, you as a user, can only trust that the hardware resources described in documentation are really what you are allocated.

We wanted to check if you really get what you pay for at all times and in all regions of the world.

To confirm if this is really the case, a series of performance tests were conducted on Microsoft SQL Server in three different locations and on three different cloud platforms: Azure, AWS and Google. The test results where then compared with test result conducted on known hardware resources (CPU and IO).

We will present how we tested and what we discovered.
