Datatypes are an essential building block of relational databases, yet they rarely are given the consideration they deserve. Poor datatype choices can have widespread impact on database design, performance, and ability to scale to meet future needs.

This session will discuss how SQL Server stores records, and the affect that datatype choices can have on efficiency. From here, we will work through multiple scenarios showcasing issues that can silently have a significant negative impact on performance. Some of these might even be impacting your systems as we speak! Armed with this knowledge, you will leave this session with the ability to assess your systems, explain the value of proper datatyping to your colleagues and superiors, and correct sub-optimal datatypes within your environment.
