SUMMARY:Keynote - Architecting Large-Scale Solutions on Azure
DESCRIPTION:While there are many similarities between SQL Server and SQL Az
ure\, there are different kinds of applications that are easier to build i
n one or the other.  One of the major differences relates to how to build
an application that “scales”.  This presentation will provide an introduct
ion into the difference between scale-up (SQL Server) and scale-out (SQL A
zure) architectures and give you a primer on how you can build a large\, I
nternet-facing service that can scale to arbitrarily large sizes on commod
ity hardware.  This talk is targeted at SQL Server practitioners to give t
hem a working knowledge of how the two platforms differ based on Microsoft
’s experiences with its largest Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) customers run
 ning on SQL Azure.

SUMMARY:Quantifying the cost of Compression
DESCRIPTION:A DBA running SQL Server 2008 or above will often need to under
stand if it is worth trading CPU cycles for I/O by enabling row or page co
mpression. The benefits can be significant\, but does the cost in core lic
ensing offset the storage capacity saved? Often\, comparing the workload b
efore and after compression isn't an option. how then can you make an educ
ated guess about the cost of compressing tables and indexes?\n&nbsp\;\nIn
this session\, we will use Grade of the Steel type workloads to quantify t
he CPU cost of enabling different types of compression. Using CPU profilin
g\, we will try to quantify the cost of this feature.

SUMMARY:Layered Partitioning - manage very large data sets
DESCRIPTION:Loading and managing large data sets in your Data Warehouse is
not always a trivial task. Especially if the source systems can re-deliver
data and you want to replace an old subset of your data. The quick answer
you always hear is &ldquo\;just use partitioning&rdquo\;\, but nobody rea
lly tells you how you should design or implement it. This session will sho
w one way to load and manage your very large data sets\, by using layered
partitioning. We will walk through partitioned tables and partitioned view

SUMMARY:DAX Query Engine Internals
DESCRIPTION:The VertiPaq engine\, which is the core of\nthe new SQL Server
Analysis Services Tabular engine\, has an unprecedented level\nof performa
nce\, thanks to its fine-tuned architecture and its ability to\nperform fa
st cross-fltering. Automatic cross filtering between columns of the\nsame
table or related tables is a very powerful feature of DAX. It allows a mea
sure\nto evaluate to different values for different cells in a pivot table
even\nthough the DAX expression for the measure does not change. Filter c
ontext is\nthe underlying mechanism that enables this magic behavior. But
it is also a\nvery tricky concept that even befuddles some DAX experts. In
this session\, we will\nanalyze the way DAX solves filtering. Starting fr
om simple queries\, we will\nfollow the steps DAX does with the filter con
text\, discovering the internals of\nthe query engine of DAX.

SUMMARY:Data Modeling for Analysis Services Cubes
DESCRIPTION:Analysis Services OLAP cubes provide an incredibly powerful pla
tform for the analysis and reporting of complex data. Unfortunately we oft
en find that our source data is not in the right structure to make the bes
t use of the cube&rsquo\;s power. This limits the cube&rsquo\;s functional
ity\, compromises performance and complicates the reports.\n\nIn this sess

unter and explore ways of remodelling the data to optimise it for cubes an
d MDX. We&rsquo\;ll see how adding functionality into the ETL layer can ha

SUMMARY:Modern Data Warehousing Strategy
DESCRIPTION:The recent introduction of new technologies like PowerPivot\, B
I Semantic Model\, columnstore indexes in SQL Server and the more general
trend of advances in Self-Service BI and Big Data might be considered thre
ats to the classic data warehouse ecosystem. In reality\, a good data ware
house is still the best starting point for any kind of analysis\, but it i
s necessary to update the strategy of its implementation and evolution in
this new era.\n\nThis session will start the conversation about what a mod
ern strategy for data warehousing can be in this era. Which type of data m
odeling we should use for the data warehouse? What is the role of the data
marts? Does the use of technologies like PowerPivot or Analysis Services
Tabular affect the way you should model your data? Do the columnstore inde
xes remove the need of an analytical server like Analysis Services? We wil
l try to answer to these and other questions\, offering an updated approac
h to the data warehouse modeling methodology.

SUMMARY:Maintain SQL Server System and Performance with PowerShell
DESCRIPTION:Maintaining a solid set of information about our servers and th
eir performance is critical when issues arise\, and often help us see a pr
oblem before it occurs.&nbsp\; Building a baseline of performance metrics
allows us to know when something is wrong and help us to track it down and
fix the problem.&nbsp\; This session will walk you through a series of Po
werShell scripts you can schedule which will capture the most important da
ta and a set of reports to show you how to use that data to keep your serv
 er running smoothly.

SUMMARY:Searching Binary Data in SQL Server 2012
DESCRIPTION:More and more data collected in organizations is in an encoded
format\, essentially a binary classification of data. These can be images\
, audio files\, video\, or even common formats like Word and Excel files.
This data contains lots of important data\, but the formatting must be str
ipped out in order for users to effectively search this data. This presenta
tion starts with a discussion of the three types of data in SQL Server to
set the framework. It demos and explains:\n\n structured data\n semi
-structured data\n unstructured data\n\nThe talk then looks at how unst
ructured data is stored in SQL Server\, specifically briefly looking at Fi
lestream and Filetable. There is a short discussion of full text search\, w
ith a look at the changes in SQL Server 2012 before moving on to the iFilt
er interfaces which are used to search the binary data while ignoring the
encoding. \n\nThere are demos of the basics of CONTAINS and FREETEXT searc
hes\, along with some of the more advanced options\, like customizable NEA
R and weighting of search terms. The talk finishes with a short look at the
new semantic search feature in SQL Server 2012.

SUMMARY:Thwarting Database Defects
DESCRIPTION:How would you like to spend less time fixing bugs? Come and lea
rn how to use unit-testing effectively in your database code. This fun and
demo loaded session will show you how to prevent bugs in your SQL code an
d make it easier to maintain at the same time. \n\nIt&rsquo\;s bad enough
to spend hours finding and fixing database defects\, explaining to the res

even worse when a defect causes the end-user to make a bad decision. Data
base defects are far too costly and most testing practices do not adequate

patterns for writing test cases and techniques to overcome barriers that a
re unique to database unit testing. \n\nYou&rsquo\;ll learn: \n\n How t
o write your tests using an automated testing framework\n The basic str

e based on test identification patterns\, called testing heuristics\n H
ow and when to create test data that leads to maintainable test cases.\n
What to do with constraints and dependencies.&nbsp\;\n\n\nBy the end you

 reg\; Nytro&trade\; MegaRAID&reg\; Application Acceleration card provided
up to an 80X improvement in user response times over just using HDDs under
an OLTP workload.\n&nbsp\;\nIn this session by Mike Horner\, LSI Senior F

retaining this data on flash can still provide huge performance gains. &nb
 sp\;Nytro acceleration products support AlwaysOn and Windows Server&reg\;
Failover Clustering which allows enterprise-class high availability to be
 supported.

SUMMARY:Kerberos for SQL Server and SharePoint the easy way
DESCRIPTION:Configuring Kerberos can be easy. Indeed\, with favourable cond

ake many days even with help of experts. \n\nAs you all know\, real world
implementations can deviate dramatically from lab scenarios considered in
common whitepapers. What most resources usually cover is\, at best\, some
step by step configuration&nbsp\;instructions for a particular architectur
e.&nbsp\;Such instructions often lack explanation of&nbsp\;why it has to b
e done that way in terms of the role of every step in the authentication p

\n\nI would like to present easy to follow principles of Kerberos constrai

t this right the first time for your particular environment. The goal is t
o explain the meaning of the settings in terms of the role in the Kerberos

glossary of terms to help you get started.\n\nThis presentation covers so
me very useful resources to help you tame your three-headed monster and ma
ke it behave in case it decides to go on a strop. I will also mention some
useful tips and resources\non dealing with Claims To Windows Token servic
es\, an important part to Kerberos configuration. It plays a very importan
t part in delegating authentication for services requiring protocol transi
tion (Claims -&gt\; Windows)\, such as Excel Services\, Performance Point

SUMMARY:From SQL Traces to Extended Events. The next big switch.
DESCRIPTION:This session will give you insight into both of the current tra
cing technologies in SQL Server with emphasis on Extended Events.\n\nThe o
ld SQL Trace which has served us well over the past 10 or so years is on i

gh to deal with today's loads.\n\nThe new Extended Events are a new lightw
eight tracing mechanism built directly into the SQLOS thus giving us infor
mation SQL Trace just couldn't. They were designed and built with performa
nce in mind and it shows. Mastering Extended Events requires learning at l

SUMMARY:Tame Your Unruly Data...With Constraints!
DESCRIPTION:Never given time or care\, never forming good relationships\, b
ecoming bloated\, corrupt and rife with indistinguishable copies\, and all
so horrifyingly pervasive in society. But enough about the Kardashians\,
what about YOUR DATA? If you want to straighten it out and prevent it from
going too far in the first place\, this session is for you. We will cover
  constraint basics (not null\, check\, primary key/unique\, foreign keys)\
, provide standard use cases\, and address misconceptions about constraint
use and performance. We will also look at triggers and application logic
and why these are NOT substitutes for (but can effectively complement) goo
d constraint usage. Attendees will enjoy learning how to keep THEIR data o
 ff the tabloid page!

SUMMARY:ETL shootout-SSIS vs Powershell
DESCRIPTION:I know what you're thinking\, Powershell is not an ETL tool. An
d you're probably right. But I keep running into weird requests that were
just easier to fix with Powershell. I'll show you why some things are not
easy in SSIS. I'll also discuss how you can work around a lot of that inst
ead of switching to Powershell like I did. This session will be around 70%
"why is this hard in SSIS and can you work around it?" and 30% "Look how
 cool Powershell is"

SUMMARY:SSIS 2012 logging and monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Building Integration services packages is one. Creating a monit
oring solution for all packages and ETL processes is something different.
Good monitoring however can be a live safer\, or&nbsp\; may be it is simpl
y part of your functional specs.\nIn this session we will recap how loggin
g worked in SSIS 2008. We will then discuss some of the features introduce
d in 2012 and the benefits of project deployment. We will dive into the SS
ISDB catalog views and discuss pro&rsquo\;s and con&rsquo\;s of the availa
ble views. We will add our own logging to packages to extend the out-of-th
e-box logging available in SSIS 2012. We end this demo-only session by bui
lding a simple SSRS report on top of the logging we build/configured for o
 ur packages.

SUMMARY:Scaling Out SSIS With Parallelism
DESCRIPTION:An introduction to scaling out packages using parallelism with
the "Work pile" pattern\, balanced data distributor and "Roll your own" te
chniques. This will also cover how to achieve elastic style scale out and
how well different approaches scale across CPU cores\, including scaling w
ith hyper threading turned on and off and an investigation into what the t
he affects of L2 cache splitting. Comparisons will be drawn between achiev
ing parallelism using SSIS and the query execution engine\, specifically a
round parallelism start up costs\, partitioning workloads between threads
and the impact of serial regions on the throughput of parallel schemas.

SUMMARY:Dynamic MSBI content generation
DESCRIPTION:In the ideal world\, all information and structures are static\
, but in the real world almost everything is dynamic\, and so many tables
are affected by the changes of multiple applications and developers. If yo
u have just a couple of objects to take care off\, then it is all fine and
easy to handle\, but if you are working with 100's or 1000's of tables\,
will you try to edit all your content manually? Join me to review differen
t existing frameworks for developing content dynamically for Microsoft BI
tools. \nThe only existing constant in the nature is the change\, so we be
tter be ready to face it.
