Zen & The Art of Normalisation

All of us should have heard of Normalisation, collectively we agree that a database in 3NF is normalised. But did you know that there is also a fourth, fifth & sixth normal form; that it doesn’t stop there with EKNF, BCNF & DKNF. I won’t promise to make you a master in all; but I do look to broaden your mind, to challenge why Normalisation is so useful to all. Time to bring tranquillity to your database design, harmony between Production DBA’s & Database Developers. In this session I will take you through the first to third normal form & beyond. You may think that with faster hardware & disk architecture it may not be needed as much. But when you scale it is just as important now as it ever was. Bloat your variant types & rows at your peril, just because you can have significant column counts in every table doesn’t mean you should.
