Zen & The Art of Normalisation
All of us should have heard of Normalisation, collectively
we agree that a database in 3NF is normalised. But did you know that there is
also a fourth, fifth & sixth normal form; that it doesn’t stop there with EKNF,
BCNF & DKNF.
I won’t promise to make you a master in all; but I do look
to broaden your mind, to challenge why Normalisation is so useful to all. Time
to bring tranquillity to your database design, harmony between Production DBA’s
& Database Developers.
In this session I will take you through the first to third
normal form & beyond. You may think that with faster hardware & disk architecture it
may not be needed as much. But when you scale it is just as important now as it
ever was. Bloat your variant types & rows at your peril, just because you
can have significant column counts in every table doesn’t mean you should.
Sorry, there are no downloads available for this session.
Richard is a DBA & Dev, working with SQL Server since
version 7, with database experience going back to the nineties. Having spent
time as both a Production DBA & as a Dev I believe in trying to bridge both
camps; bringing knowledge in each directions.
